Hit-and-Run Accident Lawyer in Hitchcock

A hit-and-run accident occurs when a motorist causes an accident and flees the scene immediately without stopping as required by law. Sadly, some motorists who engage in hit-and-run are never brought to justice.

Although your Hitchcock car accident lawyer will work closely with investigators to track down the other driver, he or she will know when to give up on the search and provide you with alternative ways of recovering compensation.

If the other driver is not found, you may still have a chance to file a claim with your own insurance company. The burden of proof will, however, be still the same. You must prove that you were not at fault for the injuries you suffered.

Because insurers and insurance companies are all the same, retaining an experienced Hitchcock hit-and-run accident lawyer will help protect your rights against bad-faith insurance tactics.

What You Should Do After a Hit-and-Run Accident in Hitchcock

If you are involved in a hit-and-run, there are certain steps our Hitchcock personal injury lawyers recommend that you take as quickly as possible for legal and medical reasons. The immediate moments following a crash exert a lot of influence on the course the aftermath takes.

To ensure you are on the safe side, remember to take the following steps:

Get to Safety

Your first step after any accident is getting to safety. Your first course of action should be moving away from possible dangers but remaining within the scene’s proximity.

For instance, if you were left sprawled on the tarmac, move away to the shoulder if you can to avoid being run over by other motorists who may be unaware of the accident.

Call 911

Next, call the police. Whether you were hurt or not, reporting the accident helps track down the other driver before they cause harm to road users and the general public. Most importantly, the police will investigate the accident and document the specifics in the final report.

You should remember to retain a hard copy of the report to establish more facts and details about the hit-and-run accident.

See a Doctor

Although some hit-and-run accidents do not result in serious injuries, many do, especiallywhen they involve motorists and pedestrians. In this case, you should put your health and well-being first. Ensure that you see a doctor as soon as possible to determine the extent of harm suffered.

This will not only help with treatment but also with documenting your injuries for compensation purposes. You will need testimonials and documentation from your doctor to prove damages and causation when filing an injury case.

Document the Scene

If you are not seriously hurt, you could remain at the scene and collect relevant details and facts about the hit-and-run accident.

Take out your phone and record the scene, capturing every moment, including the surrounding areas, skid marks on the tarmac, your injuries, damaged property, and any other information you find necessary.

Remember to provide all the details you collected to your Hitchcock hit-and-run accident lawyer during the initial consultation.

Call a Hitchcock Hit-and-Run Accident Lawyer

Hiring a Hitchcock hit-and-run accident lawyer may be necessary, especially when you are severely injured and have lost property.

A seasoned attorney will determine whether you qualify to file a claim and also help you meet the requirements for recovering compensation. They will be your official representative in all legal matters pertaining to your injuries and damages.

I Was Partially at Fault. Can I Be Compensated?

Although leaving a crash scene immediately is a criminal offense, this does not always mean that the other driver is completely at fault. So it is still possible for an injured person to bear liability even if the other driver flees. Because fault in a car accident case may involve multiple parties, it’s wise to retain a Hitchcock hit-and-run accident attorney to determine liability.

Fortunately, you may still be eligible for compensation even if you contributed to your injuries. However, the amount you receive will be reduced by your percentage of the fault. So when deciding to negotiate with insurance companies or make your case before the jury, know that your negligence will certainly impact your claim. For this reason, always watch what you say after a crash.
