Why Avoiding Mistakes Matters After a Truck Crash
The steps you take in the minutes, days, and weeks after a truck accident in Alief can significantly affect both your health and your ability to recover compensation.
Avoiding common errors helps protect your legal rights, preserve critical evidence, and prevent insurance companies from using your actions against you later. Here are the most common mistakes you should avoid in case of a truck accident:
Leaving the Scene
Truck accidents are traumatizing and usually send the parties involved into a frenzy. The anxiety and adrenaline that kick in often leave victims perplexed.
In the ensuing chaos, some flee the scene. Leaving the scene of an auto wreck is an offense in Texas, and many other states in the U.S., and thus should never happen.
Besides being a legal requirement, staying at the scene helps you collect critical information about the accident while the details are still fresh.
Additionally, leaving too soon may be viewed as an admission of fault even when you are not to blame. So, to be on the safer side, you must never leave the scene too soon unless it’s on medical grounds. Even so, you should have someone remain behind on your behalf.
Postponing Medical Care & Treatment
Although many truck accidents cause instant chaos in terms of injuries and fatalities, it is not uncommon to see some victims walk away with the impression that they escaped unhurt.
Oftentimes, this behavior is attributed to the adrenaline that rushes through the body, thus masking the symptoms of injuries that could be life-threatening.
For this reason, one of the common mistakes to avoid in a truck accident in Alief is postponing medical care or failing to follow up with treatment. Additionally, failure to do so gives insurance companies leeway to contest the credibility of your injury claim.

Not Collecting Evidence
Most accident scenes, especially those involving commercial trucks, are often chaotic. But even so, you must collect as much evidence and details from the scene before it is cleared.
If you are seriously injured and in need of medical care, ask someone to help you collect evidence at the site. It could be a friend, relative, or, better still, a truck accident attorney.
Take photographs of the scene, with shots capturing the vehicles involved, your injuries, license plates, and insurance information of the truck, as well as the contact information of all parties involved, including eyewitnesses.

Failing to Report the Crash
Failing to report a truck accident to the local police department is not only an offense but also negatively affects your chances of successfully filing an injury claim.
By reporting the crash, your injuries and losses become a public record, and therefore, lay the ground for criminal action and civil charges if someone is killed or injured. The investigations carried out by the police also play an integral part in supporting your claim.
Failing to Notify Your Insurance Company
Insurance coverage is a legal requirement for all motorists in Texas. Every driver must carry a valid insurance policy at all times. When an insured risk occurs, the insurance company carries the responsibility of paying claims.
However, the insured must align themselves with the terms and conditions of the policy, such as reporting an accident as soon as possible. Always ensure that you notify your insurance company about an accident immediately, since you may forget to do so in the chaotic aftermath of seeking treatment.
Also, do not agree to sign any documents whose content is foreign to you, or say things you shouldn’t. Doing so comes with the risk of waiving your rights to compensation. Instead, you should hire an experienced attorney to communicate on your behalf.
Admitting Fault
No matter how guilty you feel after a crash, admitting fault when you are partially to blame should never happen. It is normal to be remorseful, but saying you were to blame before proper investigations are done amounts to shooting yourself in the foot.
There is only so much you can say to protect your rights. Let a qualified attorney do the talking on your behalf.
