Many Texans derive great pleasure from motorcycling. Unfortunately, crashes are uniquely devastating for riders. The lack of proper safety features, such as safety belts, protective shields, and airbags, increases the likelihood of serious injuries or even death.
Life is usually never the same for motorcycle accident victims and their loved ones, and they deserve to hold those at fault for these accidents accountable for their actions. But before they can do that, there are certain steps to take to preserve their legal rights and ability to craft a strong claim for compensation.
Our Harlingen motorcycle accident lawyers explain what to do after a motorcycle accident in Harlingen, which includes getting medical help and consulting with an experienced attorney.
Move to Safety
Motorcyclists are usually thrown off the motorcycle during a crash and often land on hard surfaces such as tarmac. These accidents happen abruptly, so it may be too late for other road users to react in time. Therefore, you must take it upon yourself to move to safety. If you can, get away from traffic and assist anyone who’s been injured.
Seek Medical Attention
Unfortunately, some motorcycle accidents are considered minor even when they are not. This is often the case in scenarios where parties involved show no injury symptoms. But remember, not all injuries are surface-level. You may have suffered internal damage, such as broken ribs or internal bleeding.
That pain most victims brush off could be a sign of serious harm. That is why our Harlingen motorcycle accident lawyers advise victims to seek immediate medical evaluation after a crash. You shouldn’t stop there. Always ensure that you follow your doctor’s treatment plan. Failure to do so may hurt your injury case.
Call the Police
If someone has been injured or killed, dial 911 or have someone else do it if you are unable to. The police will make plans for medical evacuation and play a crucial role in establishing liability.
They will embark on a fact-finding mission to establish the facts of the crash and understand how it happened. That way, the fault is established. They will also prevent further harm by cordoning off or clearing the scene.

Collect Evidence and Talk to Witnesses
If you can, remain at the scene and collect vital information regarding the accident. For example, you can preserve tangible evidence, such as beer cans from the other party’s vehicle, to show they were drunk. It would help to collect their contact information and eyewitness testimonials. Take photos of your injuries, property damage, and the cars involved.
All these are key to proving your case and distancing yourself from liability. Remember, your ability to recover compensation will be based on negligence, and any fault on your side may negatively affect your claim.
