Motorcycling is an alternative means of transportation, both for convenience and as a sport. However, motorcycle accidents are always a possibility, especially when road users and state agencies alike fail to observe necessary standards of care. What follows a wreck is a life-changing moment, especially in scenarios that involve devastating injuries or fatalities.
In the wake of a motorcycle accident, it is important to know what steps to take both for your well-being and the safety of others. Additionally, there are legal rights to protect, and you can take actions to preserve them.
Our Dickinson motorcycle accident lawyers prepared this guide on what to do after a motorcycle accident in Dickinson. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to schedule a free consultation today.
Get to Safety
For most bikers, their two-wheelers are akin to their “baby” — treated with care and admiration. In the event of an accident, their initial instinct is often to salvage or relocate their motorcycle.
While this may seem sensible, it should not come at the cost of personal safety. Attempting to move your bike can expose you to the risk of being struck by other motorists who might be unaware of your accident. Therefore, your primary responsibility is to reach safety and distance yourself from moving traffic. If possible, move the bike safely away from the road.
Check Yourself for Injuries
Next, you should check yourself for any injuries. You should keep in mind that the rush of adrenaline after a motorcycle accident in Dickinson is likely to mask the pain and symptoms associated with serious injuries. For this reason, you should seek prompt medical evaluation and treatment.
Some of the most common injuries following a motorcycle accident in Dickinson are Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injuries, broken bones, cuts and bruises, burns, neck injuries, and internal injuries, among others. You should also remember to document your treatment and recovery for compensation purposes.
Call 911
You will also need to call the local police department to report the accident. Besides being a legal obligation, contacting the police about the crash also helps with investigating the circumstances of the accident.
The details are recorded in the final police report, which you should remember to request a copy of. This document can be used to corroborate your story when filing a motorcycle accident claim.

Document the Accident
Once you have checked yourself for injuries and contacted the police, do not leave the scene immediately unless it’s on medical grounds. Leaving an accident scene too soon is prohibited under the Texas Transportation Code.
While at the scene, take photos of the wreck, all vehicles involved, as well as their license plates. Record anything you can before the scene is tampered with or the wreckage is moved. Documenting the accident is vital for establishing fault and supporting your injury claim. You should bring these documents when meeting your motorcycle accident lawyer.

Exchange Information
If you can safely stay at the scene, take your time to gather all the information you can from the scene. Exchange vital information with the parties involved, such as their insurance, driver’s license information, and contacts.
Also, speak to as many eyewitnesses as you can and record their statements or contact information before leaving the scene. Such details are vital for supporting your claim. Your motorcycle accident lawyer will want to talk to them and record their version and account of what happened.
Consult with a Local Attorney
After seeking medical attention and collecting crucial information about the accident, remember to reach out to a motorcycle accident attorney. It’s advisable to make this call promptly, ideally within 48 hours of the crash, while the details are still fresh.
This timeframe enables your legal team to visit the scene for thorough investigations. It is crucial to have an attorney specializing in motorcycle accident claims, and the sooner you secure one, the better.
They will evaluate the specifics of your accident and injuries to ascertain your eligibility for compensation. Additionally, your Dickinson personal injury lawyer will champion your rights as you focus on treatment and recovery.
