Being hurt in any accident can be emotionally stressful and physically challenging. But while one may think that the accident itself is the hardest part, many personal injury victims may disagree. If you have been severely injured, the long road to full recovery can be frustrating, expensive, and time-consuming.
Sadly, many victims end up skipping treatment. This is detrimental to full recovery and your ability to pursue compensation for your injuries and losses.
Understanding the importance of following up with treatment after an accident is vital. Our experienced Santa Fe personal injury lawyers discuss this below.
Prioritizing Your Health
After an accident, your health should be the biggest concern. Even if your injuries seem minor, seeing a doctor can help identify other underlying conditions that may pass as benign. Some injuries do not show immediately after an accident and can worsen with time if left untreated.
When you follow up with your doctors’ appointments, you can report any new changes or symptoms that may show with time. This way, you prioritize your safety, health, and general well-being.
Documenting Your Injuries
If your injuries are severe, a full recovery should be your top priority. Failing to see your doctor as recommended raises eyebrows, especially to insurance companies. They can question the credibility of your injuries, jeopardizing your chances of making a successful injury claim.
Insurance adjusters will be aggressive in denying your claim because, in their mind, you should be doing everything reasonably possible to follow up with treatment for recovery. So, to avoid this and increase your chances of getting settled, you should follow up with your doctor’s plan to the letter.
Your injuries and treatment process will be documented as evidence, and your personal injury attorney may call upon your doctor as an expert witness in your case.
Adjusting Treatment Plan
Injuries following an accident can be unpredictable. Even though your doctor may have handled similar injuries before and has a workable treatment plan, you may need something else.
While another person with your injuries may recover sooner, you may suffer setbacks in your healing. However, this can only be addressed if you follow your doctor’s plan.
Here, you get a chance to provide feedback on your progress, thus allowing them an opportunity to offer an alternative treatment plan. This way, you get to recover sooner.

Preventing Future Complications
Injuries, whether minor or severe, can be complicated as time passes. When your doctor recommends a treatment plan, it is vital to follow it through. Failure to do so can result in further complications.
For example, if you get frustrated due to slow recovery or stop treatment midway just because you feel better, you will likely return to work. Since your injuries are not fully healed, you are prone to complications that would never have occurred if you followed your doctor’s advice.
In such a scenario, you end up not only losing all the initial progress you had made but also having to start treatment afresh. This is a waste of precious time and resources that you can avoid by just following your doctor’s plan.

Improves Healing
Your goal after any injury is to heal completely and, where possible, restore normalcy in your life. Adhering to your doctor’s treatment plan is the best way to achieve this.
Sometimes, we tend to think that doctors are being overly cautious when they recommend a treatment plan. But remember, they are the experts and, therefore, understand the need for following up with treatment. Because they have handled similar injuries, they know what it takes to improve healing.
Failing to follow your doctor’s plan will likely slow your healing process.
Why You Shouldn’t Accept the First Settlement Offer
While a call from insurance companies offering a settlement offer is something many people want, there are better things to do than accepting that offer immediately, no matter how desperate you are for compensation.
If you accept it too soon, you will likely sign your rights away. In this case, you do not stand a chance to claim further compensation when you incur additional losses.
Therefore, it is crucial that you consult with a seasoned personal injury attorney who can put your losses into perspective and determine the costs of your past and future damages.
