After an accident in Harlingen, visibly injured victims are often evacuated to the nearest hospital in ambulances. Those without serious injuries are left to decide for themselves whether they need medical attention, forgetting that some injuries are undetectable at the time and require a thorough medical evaluation to diagnose.
Unfortunately, such victims delay seeking medical attention, fail to take medications, or even stop following up with treatment plans. These mistakes can be costly. Below, our Harlingen personal injury lawyers discuss the importance of prompt medical treatment and follow-up appointments after an accident.
Why People Sometimes Avoid Medical Care After Crashes
These delays in seeking medical evaluation and following up with treatment plans are sometimes caused by busy work schedules, while other victims hope the injuries will resolve with time.
Others have financial concerns over covering treatment costs, especially those without medical insurance coverage. Some are also in denial that something is wrong. But regardless of the excuse, seeking medical treatment after an accident should be a priority.
Why is Medical Treatment After an Accident So Important?
Even if you think you were not injured, it’s a good idea to be sure, especially when your gut tells you something is not right.
For example, you may be experiencing pain and hoping it will go away with time. However, it could be something more significant, such as internal organ damage that could be catastrophic. Moreover, it may be challenging to realize the full extent of injuries sustained in an accident due to the confusion and adrenaline that follow.
Therefore, the best thing to do is to let a doctor review the harm you suffered to determine whether you should be placed under medical care or not. Some of the main reasons you should follow up with medical treatment after an accident in Harlingen are:
For Your Safety
Even if you believe your injuries are not severe, it is still essential to have a doctor review them. Most victims rely on luck, hoping the harm they suffered will resolve itself with time. While this is usually true for some minor injuries treatable at home, such as cuts and bruises, it may be difficult to determine whether your injury is serious.
For example, internal organ damage is not detectable with the naked eye and thus requires medical evaluation. That flashing pain or swelling could be catastrophic if left unchecked.
Therefore, it is essential to seek an immediate medical evaluation after an accident for your safety.
For Documentation Purposes
You should document your treatment and recovery journey, especially if you wish to pursue compensation for the harm suffered. In fact, our personal injury attorneys advise all our clients and injured people to document their injuries and treatment.
If you wait longer to get a medical evaluation, it will be difficult to link your injuries to the accident. This may hurt your chances of getting compensation for your tangible and intangible losses following the injury.
For Compliance With Insurance Companies’ Policies
Some insurance companies have policies that require the insured to show proof of injuries before the compensation process can start. You must have incurred medical expenses before you can collect damages for the same. There is no better way to comply with such policies than by doing what is right.
Furthermore, there are limits to the amount of time you are allowed to seek treatment and pursue compensation. If the time permitted lapses, you may lose your right to compensation. To avoid this, it is vital that you seek immediate medical evaluation and follow up with treatment after an accident.
To Protect Your Compensatory Rights
In your pursuit of compensation, you will undoubtedly be challenged to give up on your rights by selfish insurance adjusters. They may argue that your injuries existed before the accident or that your failure to seek and follow up with medical treatment proves they were not serious as you claim.
The best way out of such a scenario is to have proper medical records and testimonials from your doctor. On top of that, they will also be used to value your claim. Therefore, it is crucial that you note down every expense incurred throughout your treatment and recovery.
